World-class Trauma-centered Therapies

The van derKolk Center is a residential care center of excellence,  specializing in providing state of the art care for students who have experienced trauma and who may have various special needs, diagnosis, learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders.

Referrals

Referrals to the van der Kolk Center are received from in-state school systems and state agencies including the Department of Children and Families, Department of Mental Health, Department of youth Services.  We also accept referrals from private persons and out-of-state medical, mental health and social service agencies.

Admissions

Admissions are based upon referral packet information, which includes academic and psychological assessments, and previous school history. Upon receipt of a student referral packet, the Center’s admission screening team will initially determine eligibility for admission through review of written information and telephone interviews with the family, guardian and/or relevant individuals and agencies. If the initial screening is positive, an on-site pre-placement interview is scheduled.  The pre-placement interview provides a good opportunity for the student, family and/or referral source to tour the campus and help assess the appropriateness of placement.  Decision for placement is finalized after completion of an interview with the student and family (or guardian) and review of admission materials.

Alternate pre-admissions arrangements may be made, based on geographic distance and individual considerations.

To facilitate the admissions screening process, referral sources are asked to provide the following written information as part of the initial referral packet:

  • Student name, address, telephone, date of birth, social security number and emergency contact.
  • Guardianship/Custody Status
  • Name, address and telephone of the patient's insurance carrier; insurance policy group and contact number.
