For over twenty years the Trauma Center has advanced the field of posttraumatic stress by assuming a leadership role in the development, implementation, evaluation and refinement of state-of-the-art assessment, intervention, training and educational programs for individuals, families and communities impacted by overwhelming life experiences.

The mission of the Trauma Center is to help restore, rebuild and renew lives impacted by chronic trauma and adversity. Toward this end, the Center is dedicated to increasing scientific understanding and public awareness of complex adaptation to interpersonal violence, maltreatment and abuse, and to improving access and quality of clinical services for this population.

The Center is also committed to helping to build the capacity of community partners to respond to the ongoing mental health and quality of life needs of the traumatized populations that they serve by fostering the development of sustainable and culturally competent local infrastructures through a "train-the-trainer" model. Through its membership in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and the Hamilton Fish Youth Violence Prevention Consortium, the Trauma Center provides local programming, national leadership and technical assistance on topics including complex adaptation to chronic trauma exposure, effective intervention strategies, youth violence prevention, training program and measure development, and the neurobiology of traumatic stress.
