Glenhaven Academy for adolescent girls, was established in 2001 as part of JRI's ongoing commitment to developing state-of-the-art treatment approaches for adolescent girls. The program focuses on the special challenges of adolescent girls with emotional and behavioral disturbances. The program serves 24 youngsters with the following profile:

Our students generally have had difficulty in traditional school settings, have impulsive outbursts, histories of self-injury, aggression, and/or other unsafe behaviors. Typically, they have suffered multiple placement failures, including psychiatric hospitalizations. The program emphasizes the following elements:

  • 24-hour therapeutic milieu specifically designed for adolescent girls and individually modified as needed
  • Developing appropriate relationships with adults and peers
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Skill-building
  • Modeling appropriate coping skills
  • Effective education for girls at all levels in small classroom settings
  • Curricula individualized according to the child's IEP
  • Social skills training
  • Preparation for transition to next level of care

Glenhaven Academy for special needs adolescent girlsThe Staff and peer culture emphasize strengths and recognize the importance of relationships to a girl's developing sense of self. The milieu supports each girl in developing her own voice, with increasing levels of privileges linked to responsibilities. A respectful peer culture promotes individual growth. Liberal ratios of staff to students enable individual attention and intensive rehabilitation services. The interdisciplinary staff includes teachers, clinicians, recreation staff, counselors, and nurses. Lengths of stay range from 12 to 24 months, and careful aftercare planning helps to ensure that the skills acquired at the program translate into success in the larger community.

In addition to the above mentioned services we have a strong focus on the treatment of complex trauma. We work in collaboration with the internationally known Trauma Center to develop state of the art treatment for complex trauma in adolescent females.

We also frequently incorporate "Sidda", our certified Pet Therapy dog, into the treatment of our students. Sidda is a chocolate lab mix who spend time with students both formally and informally to support them in addressing their treatment goals.

Glenhaven is also part of the JRI Doc Wayne Athletic league which allows interested students to participate in formalized team sports including soccer, basketball and softball. Our student receive team uniforms, have regular practices and are able to engage in friendly competition with other area schools.

Glenhaven Academy is licensed by the Office of Child Care Services, approved by the Department of Education and a Member of the Massachusetts Association of Approved Private Schools.
